Haywood County School System has over 15 schools with over
7,600 students. There are 9 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 2 high
schools and 1 alternative high school. Haywood County Schools is
the county's second largest employer with approximately 1150 employees.
Haywood County students consistently score above state and regional averages
in the end of grade and end of course tests. The 1997 SAT score of 999
was above all but five systems in Western North Carolina and ranked out
of 117 North Carolina Systems. The Haywood County Schools System has a
vision to provide each and every student "Success for today, Preparation

**In 1995, Hazelwood incorporated into the Town of Waynesville and Waynesville's
population became 9,424.
TAXES
Haywood County and its incorporated communities operate
on the Fiscal Year beginning July 1. Property Taxes are 61 cents per
$100 of the accessed value determined by the County. The incorporated
town values are:
*Canton - 61 cents per $100 value
*Clyde - 45 cents per $100 value
*Waynesville - 40 cents per $100 value
*Maggie Valley - 36 cents per $100 value
The Sales Tax in Haywood County is 6% and there are some exemptions
in areas of industry, agriculture and consumer purchases, such as prescription
medications. Sales of New Vehicles are taxable at 3%.
Residents of North Carolina must pay a State Income Tax. The Tax Rate
is 6 or 7%, plus an amount calculated on a graduated scale. The Filing
Date is April 15.
